Mr Annakan Navaratnam and colleagues publish paediatric septoplasty review
Mr Annakan Navaratnam and colleagues at hospitals across the UK have published a national survey of current attitudes and practices regarding paediatric septoplasty in The Journal of Laryngology and Otology.
Paediatric septoplasty remains a contentious topic due to concerns about its potential impact on midfacial growth. A survey was distributed to independently practising ENT surgeons across the UK, and opinions were polarised, with rhinologists and consultants with more than 10 years’ experience more likely to offer surgery.
Annakan discussed paediatric septoplasty in a previous article on the timing of nasal surgery:
“If a septal operation needs to be undertaken at an early age, then there are methods we can employ to minimise disruption to mid-facial growth. This includes very technical aspects, such as avoiding certain growth plates or the junctions between bone and cartilage.
“Intervening earlier in a conservative way can help in the long term, always taking into account that they may require further surgery at a later date.”
